Diagnosing Mesothelioma
By El Cartel
Because of the similarity of symptoms to other, less deadly illnesses, it is difficult to diagnose. The first thing a physician would do is review the patients medical history and history of asbestos exposure. A physical examination will first be performed along with an X-ray of the chest. If the X-ray reveals any signs of pleural thickening, a common occurrence with asbestos exposure, then a CAT scan or MRI is usually performed. Another way to diagnosis mesothelioma is PET (Positron Emission Topography). A PET scan, while fairly expensive and not covered by some insurances, is very accurate at diagnosing tumour sites as well as determining the stage of mesothelioma. Abnormal cells may be detected by cytology, and if so, fluid is aspirated with a syringe. If abnormal cells are found and the threat of mesothelioma is present then a biopsy is administered to confirm a diagnosis. The doctor will remove a sample of tissue to be examined by a pathologist. If the cancerous cells are found in the chest then the doctor may use a procedure called a thorascoscopy where a small incision is made between the ribs. A tube called a thorascoscope is then placed in the chest and tissure samples are collected. The doctor may perform a laparoscopy if the cancer is found in the abdomen. A small incision is made into the abdominal cavity and a special tool removes cells to be examined as well. In cases where not enough tissue than surgery may be a possibility. |
